Walthers Proto 2000 Heritage 0-8-0 Version 2
WOWKit used in this installation
Which includes the following items:
This installation is for a HO Scale Proto 2000 Heritage 0-8-0. This installation uses a TCS WOW121 Steam decoder, B-MB2 Motherboard with Keep Alive® and UNIV-SH2-C WOWSpeaker kit. This was performed by our friends at DCC Xpress Installations.
HO-Scale Proto 2000 Heritage 0-8-0 with tender shown prior to installation.
To begin this install, there are several screws to remove on the tender bottom. The four highlighted above in red at each corner as well as the rear coupler screw and front connector screw. These last two are removed for installation convenience. With these screws removed, the tender shell will lift off of the chassis.
With the shell removed, remove the screw highlighted above in red and with it the original lighting board. Underneath, remove the single screw holding the weight in place as well.
Shown with the weight lifted. In this installation, the original bulb lighting was replaced with long lasting TCS Golden White LEDs. Make sure the lighting wire leads are properly fed through this weight.
The tender shown without the original components. In order for the sound to escape the shell for the best possible sound output, the tender chassis needs to have a group of small holes drilled into it.
Here the tender chassis is shown drilled and prepped properly for installation. At this time, the weight may be re-placed and screwed down. Be mindful not to pinch any wires!
To prevent possible shorts, wrap the capacitors on the new B-MB2 with TCS Kapton tape.
Using foam, double sided tape, mount the B-MB2 motherboard on top of the weight as shown above. Solder the track pickup from the tender, rear LED, and the wires from the original harness coming out of the locomotive in accordance with the wiring diagram.
To replace the front headlight bulb with the LED, carefully loosen the front boiler plate as shown above. With the cover removed, pull out the plastic retainer with the forward headlight.
With the boiler plate removed, the headlight bulb is easily accessible for replacement. The new LED can be spliced into the original wire leads. Reassemble by reversing the steps above.
With the locomotive LED complete, you can now install the speaker. Use foam, doble-sided tape to secure the enclosure with speaker to the weight in the tender. Solder the wires from the speaker to the two Speaker pads on the motherboard. Plug in the WOW121 Steam decoder and close up the tender. Be mindful of wire routing and reassembly as to not crush any wires or foul the installation. Your Proto 2000 Heritage 0-8-0 Steam locomotive is now WOWSound equipped and ready to roll!
Important Soldering Tip
Please do not use any flux either liquid or paste on the mother board. Over time, the acidic properties of liquid or paste flux will begin eating away at the fiberglass PCB and will damage it. Use only Rosin-core solder or no-clean flux approved for electronics use.
TCS recommends the use of Kester "44" Sn63 Pb37, .015" diameter Rosin-core solder. Kester part number 24-6337-0007.
You can order this solder from the following retailers:
Digikey - PN:KE1110-ND
Techni-Tool - PN:488SO6775
Other solder tips
When stripping wire, only strip a tiny little bit of the insulation. Strip no more than a 1/32 of an inch. When the wire gets tinned with solder, the insulation will shrink back more. Try to not expose any more wire than half the length of the solder pad at most. In no case should solder or exposed wire wire ever be outside the boundary of the the solder pad you are attaching a wire to.
