Broadway Limited J1 2-10-4 Steam
WOWKit used in this installation
Which includes the following items:
This installation is for a HO Scale Broadway Limited J1 2-10-4 Steam using a TCS WOW121 Steam Decoder, B-MB4 Motherboard with built in Keep Alive® and 32mm WOWSound speaker.
The Broadway Limited J1 2-10-4 locomotive and tender shown prior to installation. To begin, we address the tender. To remove the shell, simply lift the shell off, being careful to protect the handrails, etc... when doing so. Here the tender is shown with the shell off.
The tender shown with the shell removed. First, remove the two screws on the original lighting board and remove the wire leads from it. Remove it from the tender. Cut the plugs off of the wire leads.
Next, remove the two screws from the weight shown above and remove the weight from the chassis. Save these screws for the weight re-installation. Remove the two original speakers. These will not be reused.
Place the 32 mm WOWSound speaker into the rear opening and using a small amount of hot melt glue, secure this speaker into the opening. We have found that with the single speaker and adjoining open port, the resulting sound and delayed sound from the rear of the speaker is amazing. NOTE: You must be very careful to avoid getting glue on the speaker cone. Glue on the speaker will ultimately cause it to produce no sound and fail.
Using the saved screws, reinstall the original weight and then using double sided foam tape, mount the B-MB4 to the top of the weight as shown. Trim, tin or lengthen the wire leads as needed and using small lengths of TCS 3/32" and 3/64" shrink tubing, insulate these solder leads.
Solder the tender's track, rear LED and new speaker wire leads to the motherboard as shown.
With the wire /plug order identified, solder the correct locomotive wire leads to the B-MB4 according to the included wiring diagram. These will include the track, motor and front LED leads. At this point, we need to shift our attention to the locomotive and remove it's shell.
To remove the locomotive shell, first, remove the screw highlighted in red above located at the rear of the locomotive.
Next, remove the second screw in the rear.
Finally, slide the front truck aside and remove the final screw highlighted above in red. With these three screws removed, slide the shell rearward slightly and it will lift from the chassis. Be careful to release the front LED lighting board from the frame opening as you do so. Set all these screws aside for later use.
The locomotive chassis shown with the shell removed. On the top, just in front of the motor, is a small wire mount board that feeds power and control to the original smoke unit. This component will not be used in this installation.
Clip the two wire leads from the smoke unit board and secure these aside. These will not be used. With this single step done, reassemble the locomotive, reversing the disassembly steps with the saved screws.
You can now plug in your WOW121 steam decoder. Lastly, in order to keep the wires neat and prevent possible shorts, lace the wires into a bundle using lacing cord, which is a wax impregnated string used for wire bundling and making harnesses. There are many choices of lacing cord available from Digikey www.digikey.com. We use part number 802534B BK032-ND Now you can close up the locomotive and tender. Be sure to be mindful of wire routing and reassembly of the shell as to not damage or foul the installation. Your Broadway Limited J1 2.10.4 is now WOWSound equipped and ready to roll!
Important Soldering Tip
Please do not use any flux either liquid or paste on the mother board. Over time, the acidic properties of liquid or paste flux will begin eating away at the fiberglass PCB and will damage it. Use only Rosin-core solder or no-clean flux approved for electronics use.
TCS recommends the use of Kester "44" Sn63 Pb37, .015" diameter Rosin-core solder. Kester part number 24-6337-0007.
You can order this solder from the following retailers:
Digikey - PN:KE1110-ND
Techni-Tool - PN:488SO6775
Other solder tips
When stripping wire, only strip a tiny little bit of the insulation. Strip no more than a 1/32 of an inch. When the wire gets tinned with solder, the insulation will shrink back more. Try to not expose any more wire than half the length of the solder pad at most. In no case should solder or exposed wire wire ever be outside the boundary of the the solder pad you are attaching a wire to.
