Installation

This installation documentation is for the HO Scale Broadway Limited RSD-15 (High Hood) using a TCS WOW121-Diesel Decoder, IB-MB2 Motherboard with built in Keep Alive® and 28mm WOWSpeaker. This installation also uses a 6-Pin JST harness for "IB" motherboards to wire in the headlights. This installation was performed by DCC Xpress Installations.

The speaker in this installation may be substituted for a "High Bass" 28mm WOWSpeaker for better bass response and volume! Check out the video linked at the bottom of this page for an example of the installation process and demonstration of the sound quality using that speaker.

NOTE: This installation process applies to both the High-hood and Low-hood variants of the RSD-15 from Broadway Limited; however, it is important to know that there are several generations of this model which used different sound decoders. The model depicted in this installation documentation had a DC board installed with JST connectors compatible with our IB-MB2 motherboard. Most QSI-generation decoders use the same style of plugs. If you have a model equipped with a Paragon decoder, the connectors may not be compatible. You can still use the IB-MB2 motherboard by wiring in our compatible wiring harnesses. Visit our Connectors section to browse the available options!

Shown with the IB-MB2 properly installed. Using the original wire connections, plug in the track and motor connections. Note that on this model, the headlights are separate, and need to be slpliced into the 6-pin connector in order for them to function. Snip off the original lighting connectors, then splice the + connections together into the BLUE wire. The (-) for the forward light must be spliced into WHITE and the (-) for the rear light into YELLOW of the new 6-pin lighting harness.

Shown with the new lighting harness spliced and plugged into the motherboard. Using small lengths of TCS 3/32" and 3/64" shrink tubing, insulate these solder connections. Note that the aditional wires are not used for this installation, and can be snubbed; alternatively, they may be used to add additional lighting to your model!

Insert the 28mm speaker into either side of the A-frame housing facing outward from the inside facing outward. It will gently fit. In order to secure it properly, use hot glue - add a few small dots from the back side of the speaker to hold it in place. Once it is set, seal the back edge of the speaker in the frame around the circumference. Plug in the speaker connector to the motherboard. This photo is shown from the back of the speaker. NOTE: You must be very careful to avoid getting glue on the speaker cone. Glue on the speaker will ultimately cause it to fail.

You can now plug in your WOW121 decoder. Lastly, in order to keep the wires neat and prevent possible shorts, lace the wires into a bundle using lacing cord, which is a wax impregnated string used for wire bundling and making harnesses. There are many choices of lacing cord available from Digikey www.digikey.com. We use part number 802534B BK032-ND Now you can close up the locomotive. Be sure to be mindful of wire routing and reassembly of the shell as to not damage or foul the installation. Your Broadway Limited RSD-15 is now WOWSound equipped and ready to roll! Check out the video linked below for a brief overview of the installation process!

Important Soldering Tip

Please do not use any flux either liquid or paste on the mother board. Over time, the acidic properties of liquid or paste flux will begin eating away at the fiberglass PCB and will damage it. Use only Rosin-core solder or no-clean flux approved for electronics use.

TCS recommends the use of Kester "44" Sn63 Pb37, .015" diameter Rosin-core solder. Kester part number 24-6337-0007.

You can order this solder from the following retailers:
Digikey - PN:KE1110-ND
Techni-Tool - PN:488SO6775

Other solder tips

When stripping wire, only strip a tiny little bit of the insulation. Strip no more than a 1/32 of an inch. When the wire gets tinned with solder, the insulation will shrink back more. Try to not expose any more wire than half the length of the solder pad at most. In no case should solder or exposed wire wire ever be outside the boundary of the the solder pad you are attaching a wire to.
