This installation uses the following decoder:

T1

TCS T1 Decoder Installation for HO-Scale Hornby 9F 2-10-0 Tank Locomotive. It was performed by Robert Lewis of Tilehust, Reading, United Kingdom.

Pick-up is via the driving wheels of the locomotive, and the outer wheels of the tender, connection from the locomotive is via flexible contacts mounted either side of the locating pin.
To remove the tender body, gently pry the sides apart in the centre and it should slide upwards.

Either cut or de-solder the capacitor connected across the motor terminals, and bend the disconnected lead away from the motor terminal.
Disconnect the red and black wires from the motor terminals. Join the 2 red wires together with the red decoder wire, insulating the joint on completion, and then join the black wires together with the black decoder wire, again insulating the joint on completion.
Connect the grey wire to the front motor terminal and the orange to the rear.

Use double sided tape to stick the decoder to the front ballast weight. I cut the unused wires right back to the connector as the is little room to spare for excess wires. Replace tender body.

Important Soldering Tip

Please do not use any flux either liquid or paste on the mother board. Over time, the acidic properties of liquid or paste flux will begin eating away at the fiberglass PCB and will damage it. Use only Rosin-core solder or no-clean flux approved for electronics use.

TCS recommends the use of Kester "44" Sn63 Pb37, .015" diameter Rosin-core solder. Kester part number 24-6337-0007.

You can order this solder from the following retailers:
Digikey - PN:KE1110-ND
Techni-Tool - PN:488SO6775

Other solder tips

When stripping wire, only strip a tiny little bit of the insulation. Strip no more than a 1/32 of an inch. When the wire gets tinned with solder, the insulation will shrink back more. Try to not expose any more wire than half the length of the solder pad at most. In no case should solder or exposed wire wire ever be outside the boundary of the the solder pad you are attaching a wire to.
