This installation uses the following decoder:


The installation is for HO-Scale Con-Cor Burlington Zephry. It uses a TCS DP2X decoder and was performed by a TCS Customer.

Train Control Systems DP2X decoder is the best choice for this plug n play installation. The lighting for the interior lights, head lights, rear light, and rear red marker lights all work nicely. This train comes with a DCC socket. The DP2X is plug n play for it. There is room to plug the decoder in only one way, which is the way it needs to be to operate the headlights properly. Important note: There is a capacitor across the motor circuit that needs to be removed. If left on, the train will run to fast in DCC operation.

To remove the body gently spread the shell starting at the rear and work your way forward. There are four hooks on each side that must be disengaged and the shell will lift straight up. The plug at the rear of the loco is for control of the rear headlight.

The photo below shows DP2X decoder plugged into NMRA socket. The decoder plugs in slightly cocked because of the bulkhead near the socket, however, it does fit securely with good connections and works fine with no problem.

There are ten pins instead of the normal eight pins in the NMRA socket. Pins nine and ten are used for sound decoder installations. Plug the DP2X decoder towards the engineers' side of the socket. Important note. The motor is reversed wired for normal direction control. This can easily be correct in one of two ways. Add one to the value in CV29 of the decoder.

Example: if CV29=6 (two digit addressing) set it to seven. If CV29=38 (four digit addressing) make it 39. The second option is to reverse the motor leads where they are connected amidship on the lighting board.

Important Soldering Tip

Please do not use any flux either liquid or paste on the mother board. Over time, the acidic properties of liquid or paste flux will begin eating away at the fiberglass PCB and will damage it. Use only Rosin-core solder or no-clean flux approved for electronics use.

TCS recommends the use of Kester "44" Sn63 Pb37, .015" diameter Rosin-core solder. Kester part number 24-6337-0007.

Other solder tips

When stripping wire, only strip a tiny little bit of the insulation. Strip no more than a 1/32 of an inch. When the wire gets tinned with solder, the insulation will shrink back more. Try to not expose any more wire than half the length of the solder pad at most. In no case should solder or exposed wire wire ever be outside the boundary of the the solder pad you are attaching a wire to.
